Government and business can develop an ethical AI future together, KPMG study finds
The pandemic turned the world upside down and businesses stepped up to the challenge, accelerating their digital transformation and harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to help overcome new challenges in a new world. A new study by KPMG, Thriving in an AI World: Unlocking the Value of AI across 7 Industries," found that while some executives are experiencing a bit of COVID-19-induced whiplash as they reckon with AI challenges, industry leaders are optimistic about the new administration's role in helping to achieve an AI-forward future. "We reached out to decision-makers, many of whom said AI is moving too fast, but many also felt that the U.S. is being left behind when it comes to AI adoption," says Swami Chandrasekaran, managing director at the KPMG Digital Lighthouse and Head of Digital Solutions Architecture. How The Department Of Defense Approaches Ethical AI
Military and defense organizations using transformative technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning can realize tremendous gains and help to maintain advantages over increasingly capable adversaries and competitors. It can allow autonomous vehicles to go into terrain deemed too dangerous for humans, provide predictive analytics and maintenance to keep large fleets running smoothly and safely, and help to provide autonomous operations in difficult conditions. As the US Department of Defense (DoD) increasingly adopts AI technology in a wide variety of use cases ranging from back-office functions to battlefield operations, there is a realization that despite the benefits that AI can bring, there is also a risk of unintended consequences that could cause significant harm by using these various technologies. As a result, the DoD takes the topics of topics of ethics, transparency, and ethics policy very seriously. A few years ago, the DoD created the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center, also referred to as the JAIC, to help figure out how to best move forward with this transformative technology.

Why every AI company should have an ethics policy - and here's ours
AI companies have a social responsibility to consumers to be open about what exactly they are doing with this technology - and how. Phrasee is proud to be one of the first companies in the world working in AI for marketing to do so. We're taking the lead and codifying what we believe to be an ethical way to run an AI business, and have drawn up an ethics policy that is practical, specific and explicit. It is surprising AI ethics policies aren't more commonplace and that we appear to be one of the few companies not only promoting what we believe in, but also putting our head above the parapet about it. If the wider marketing community is to realise the commercial benefits of AI, we also need to put the fundamentals in place and collectively drive an ethical marketing agenda. This starts with committing to paper what we will and won't do for the greater good.
